First female college football player scorned for kicking: “Did the ball even move?”

17

Leilani Armenta is the first female college football player to become the first woman in JSU football history.

In a groundbreaking moment at Jackson State University (JSU), history was made on the football field. JSU, located in Mississippi, found itself in a unique situation during its game against Bethune-Cookman University’s Wildcats, another historically Black college or university (HBCU).

Although the JSU Tigers won the game, it was the incident that took place that stuck out the most. A female football player for JSU took the field for the first time ever. She assumed the kicker’s position, which is typically held by a male player. This historic event represented a crucial turning point in the history of collegiate football.

Still, despite this outstanding accomplishment, the first female football player on social media came under fire.

Yet, the JSU Tigers’ victory and the trailblazing moment they created, people will remember as a step forward in the world of college sports.

“Did the Ball Even Move?”-People in social media criticizing first female college football player’s skill

People posted the video of Leilani Armenta kicking the football on social media. After the historic kick, some people are saying- “The average high school male could kick the ball farther with absolutely no training.”

Some X users also question why a female football player is in the male game.

“Would this be considered a Diversity Hire?”

There are already female football teams available- “There’s a reason why women should never play sport with men. They’re just not good enough.”

This is the first time a woman is playing in a men’s football team.

Armenta, who the university didn’t let talk to reporters, is getting better after getting hurt. On Saturday, she played with a special brace on her right knee.

She hurt her knee when she was in high school at St. Bonaventure. Back then, she played girls’ soccer and also kicked for the football team.

But during the game on Saturday, Armenta only got to kick the ball once at the very beginning. After that, the coach of the Tigers, T.C. Taylor, had two of the team’s running backs do the kickoffs.

And when Jackson State scored touchdowns, instead of trying to kick the extra point like usual, they decided to go for a two-point conversion. It was a different strategy they used because of the situation.

What do you think about this whole situation? Does the First female college football player deserve to be mocked?
