Miss Universe is the most iconic beauty pageant. The names of every contestant crowned Miss Universe and their life-changing stories will forever be written in the history books. Over the years, we’ve seen some beautiful ladies win the crown. These beautiful women have played a significant role in our society.

1. Margie Moran-Floirendo (1973)

Miss Universe 1973 Maria Margarita Roxas Moran-Floirendo was born on September 15, 1953, professionally her name is Margie Moran. She is best known for winning the Miss Universe crown for the Philippines as Miss Universe 1973. She is a Filipino beauty queen, actress. She finished her Business Administration degree at Maryknoll College and Boston University and took her master’s degree at the federal University of London, awarded through the School of Oriental and African Studies.

Margie Moran was 21 years old when she married congressman Antonio R. Floirendo, Jr. of  Davao del Norte . They have two daughters, Monica Danielle and Gabrielle Antoinette. After 30 years of marriage, Margie Moran and her husband now living separate.

She headed several private companies like a resort called “Pearl Farm” in Samal Island, Davao del Norte from 1989 to 1994, hosted “Margie on Mindanao” on TV and produced a multi-awarded movie, Bagong Buwan.

2. Lupita Jones (1991)

Lupita Jones was crowned the Title in 1991. She was born on September 6, 1967. Her real name is María de Guadalupe Jones Garay, who we know as Lupita Jones. She is a Mexican model, actress, beauty queen and television producer. She is the first Mexican contestant to win a major international beauty pageant for the first time.

Jones has served as the national director of the Mexicana division of the Mexicana Universal franchise since 1994. She was a candidate for governor of Baja California in the 2021 Mexican gubernatorial election.

3. Dayanara Torres (1993)

Dayanara Torres was born in October 28, 1974, who won the Title in 1993. Who knew her luck would change like this. Dayanara Torres is a Puerto Rican actress, singer, model, writer and beauty queen.

In 1993, Torres won the crown in the Miss Universe pageant held in Mexico. Torres had turned 18 several months before the contest. After winning the Miss Universe pageant, Torres returned home to Puerto Rico, she was received with a parade.

Torres became an ambassador for UNICEF during her reign as Miss Universe and later, traveled to Asia and Latin America in support of the organization. She created the Dayanara Torres Foundation which has provided scholarships to poor students in Puerto Rico and the Philippines.

4. Sushmita Sen (1994)

Sushmita Sen was the first Indian woman to win the Miss Universe pageant in 1994. Her answer in the final round won the hearts of the judges and millions of people. She exudes confidence and an epitome of grace and elegance.

When Sushmita was 19 years old, she participated in the Miss India pageant and won the title defeating everyone’s favorite Aishwarya Rai. On May 21, 1994, Sushmita made history when she became the first Indian woman to win the Miss Universe title.

Her way from childhood to becoming Miss Universe was not so easy. She has struggled a lot in her life. She is a single mother of two daughters – Renee and Alisa. She adopted both her daughters. Sushmita has not shied away from taking bold decisions in life.

5. Lara Dutta (2000)

Lara Dutta won the title in 2000 who was the second time in the history of the beauty pageant that an Indian participant had won the title. Lara Dutta achieved the highest score in the swimsuit competition. It’s also worth noting that her finalist interview score was the highest individual score in any category in the history of the Miss Universe contest.

Her first Hindi debut in 2003 was with the film “Andaaz.” This film was a box office success and even won her a Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. Lara’s husband’s name is Mahesh Bhupathi . 6. Denise Quinones (2001)

Denise Quinones attended the School for Flim and Television’s two-year conservatory acting program. In 2021, Quinones stepped down as national director and Yizette Cifredo was designated as her successor.

7. Pia Wurtzbach (2015)

Pia Wurtzbach is the third Filipina to win the crown. Pia Wurtzbach was born in Stuttgart, Germany. She represented Philippines at the Miss Universe 2015 pageant. Wurtzbach is a professional model, actress and TV host. She began acting at age 4 under the stage name Pia Romero.

In 2017, Wurtzbach stated that she has signed a contract with WME/IMG’s IMG Universe division. She will continue to work as an HIV/AIDS awareness advocate after her Miss Universe reign. In 2017, she served as a judge on the final coronation night of Miss Universe.

In June 2020, Pia confirmed her relationship with Scottish entrepreneur Jeremy Jauncey. Her marriage on March 24, 2023 was only announced on May 5.

8. Catriona Gray (2018)

On December 17, 2018, Catriona Gray is crowned with the title during the final round of the Miss Universe pageant in Bangkok, Thailand. Gray is the fourth Filipina to win the Miss Universe competition. She was born 6 January 1994. She is a Filipina model, singer and beauty queen.

Gray was a student at Trinity Anglican School and she received a graduate certificate in music theory from Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.

Gray became the ambassador of the Philippine Red Cross during the Covid-19 pandemic, On 6 September 2020. Gray has advocated for women’s rights. The Philippines’ National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) designated Catriona Gray as the agency’s Ambassador for the Arts, in February 2020.

9. Zozibini Tunzi (2019)

Miss Universe (2019) Zozibini Tunzi was born on September 18, 1993 in Tsolo, Eastern Cape . She is a South African model, actress and beauty pageant. She is South Africa’s third Miss Universe winner; she is the first black woman to win the Miss Universe title.

Zozibini Tunzi was completing a Bachelor of Technology graduate degree in public relations management at Cape Peninsula University of Technology.

She competed in the preliminaries on 6 December, and competed in the finals on 8th December at Tyler Perry Studios. Her win in 2019 became the first year that four major US-based competitions were won by black women.

Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, Tunzi made her acting debut in the film “The Woman King” ,and released on 16 September 2022.

10. R’Bonney Gabriel (2022)

Miss Universe (2022) R’Bonney Gabriel was born March 20, 1994 in Houston, Texas. She is a model, designer and beauty pageant. She is an American beauty queen who was crowned Miss Universe 2022. She represented the United States at the Miss Universe 2022 pageant.

R’Bonney Gabriel graduated from the University of North Texas with a bachelor’s degree in fashion design with a minor in fibers. R’Bonney Gabriel made history in December 2021 as the first Filipina-American to win Miss Texas USA.
