The World Of Hayao Miyazaki 

Live life to the fullest . That’s the simple message Hayao  Miyazaki has preached in all of his incredible films. When we talk about anime , the names that pop into our mind are ‘Spirited Away’, ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’, ‘My Neighbor Totoro’, ‘Ponyo’. These incredible films are the creation of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli . In the wondrous films of  Miyazaki , we get action , war , thrilling chases . But we also get moments like peace , tranquility , balance, peace. The amalgamation of these different streams in a balanced way makes Miyazaki’s world so unique.

Early Life Of Miyazaki

Hayao Miyazaki has multiple identities. He is the founder of the biggest anime studio ‘Studio Ghibli’ in Japan. He is a pacifist , a feminist, an Oscar winner film maker  and an environmental activist . Miyazaki was born on 5 January,1941 in Tokyo . His family had an aircraft  business called Miyazaki Airplane. The business had a great effect on Hayao. A special passion for sky and aircraft developed in his heart.

His childhood spent in Utsunomiya , a small town, had brought him  closer to nature .Since then nature has occupied a significant spot in his work and life. The childhood of the filmmaker was not a pleasant one . His mother was sick and bedridden . He had a difficult relationship with his father . In later life , he accused his father of using the war to gain profit. Creativity and the fictional world gave him peace of mind from these difficulties. He connected his life with his drawings. “Fantasy is necessary for children in order to escape from the tough reality they face,” he said. ‘I believe the main goal of our work is to tell children that life is worth living. That hasn’t changed’ , the 83 years filmmaker articulated.

Miyazaki’s visual creations are just on a different level . His world is filled with interesting creatures and beautiful aircrafts , the serenity of nature . A deep part of that imagination is rooted in the belief that there are spirits everywhere and they deserve awe and respect . He has perfected the art of silence and emptiness in his films. In Japanese it is called ‘Ma’ or emptiness.

Studio Ghibli

In 1985 Hayao founded Studio Ghibli along with Toshio Suzuki, Isao Takahata. Ghibli , an Arabic word for a hot breeze from the Sahara ,is derived from Italian. It is also the name of a particular class of military aircraft. The name was picked to represent their aim to give the animation industry a fresh start and is also the name of a particular class of military aircraft. It was undoubtedly a life changing event in his life .

Among the top ten anime feature films produced in Japan , five of the films are studio Ghibli’s productions. The character Totoro from the 1988 movie ‘My Neighbor Totoro’ is their mascot and their most recognizable symbol. The studio has produced world wide famous films like Castle in The Sky , Kiki’s Delivery Service , The Boy and The  Heron , Princess Mononoke, Grave of The Fireflies , Whisper of The Heart , The Wind Rises , Arrietty and many more. Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki made history by winning the Oscar two times . For ‘ Spirited Away ‘ (2001) and for ‘The Boy and The Heron ‘ (2023).  He was selected to receive an Honorary Award at the Governors Awards of the Academy in 2014.
