Respiratory Diseases in US

Recently, the respiratory viruses showed a comeback again with their seasonal activities which infects the U.S residents maintaining a high rate. Thus, respiratory diseases in US are on a rise once again.

Infection Statistics

According to US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), during the last week of December 2023, more than 29000 Covid-19 patients were admitted to the hospital. Approximately 15000 patients admitted to the hospital who had flu, and 1000 more patients were suffering from RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus).

CDC data also shows that in US, Covid-19 is the leading respiratory disease till now. The number of Covid-19 affected patients at this time is higher than last year’s same timeline. Emergency visits increased 12% and hospitalizations rate became 17% higher in this week.

Alongside Covid-19, flu infection is also on a swift rise. CDC estimation informed that there are 73000 hospitalized patients, more than 7 million civilians are affected, and 4500 deaths are counted due to the flu infection this season. The other indicators are also gradually rising.

Furthermore, as per the latest update of CDC entitled as Weekly U.S. Influenza Surveillance Report (FluView), there is an increasing trend of being affected by Influenza and the rate is approximately 16.1%, and 6.1% people tend to visit a healthcare provider due to their respiratory disease symptoms. The cumulative hospitalization is 15.4% (for 100000 people).

There are 14732 patients admitted to hospitals with influenza and 7 pediatric deaths are counted. Mortality status of the week is 0.5%.

Young children and adult people are mostly affected by RSV.

Severe Areas

The midwest and northeast region of the country seem to be the severe areas for Covid-19. Covid-19 was responsible for 3.3% of all deaths last week and these death counts were higher from the midwest and northeast.

On the other hand, CDC in their FluView update reported that southeast region is being filled up by flu activities gradually. Test positivity at clinical labs are more than 20% in south central and southeast area.

United States cities like California, New York and Washington are also in a high to very high-risk zone of flu diseases.

Expert Opinions

Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine stated that the recent flu activities is kind of a triple threat. Because the winter wave is bringing winter respiratory pathogens like Covid, flu and RSV. Alongside these, a fourth threat also joined in hands which is pneumococcal pneumonia that is worsening the flu diseases.

Dr. William Schaffner of Vanderbilt University says that influenza and updated Covid vaccines are underutilized. It’s better if these medicines are utilized adequately before it’s too late, as these respiratory diseases will be dominating the country for a few more days, or months.
