Naomi Osaka is set to make comeback after becoming a mother

Former world No.1 tennis player Naomi Osaka is set to make her comeback to the sport at the Brisbane International on Sunday.

The 26 year old was seen training in Brisbane on Christmas Day and is expected to play her first match on Wednesday. The tournament is a crucial preparatory tournament for the Australian Open next month.

The two-time Australian Open and US Open champion did not play last year’s Australian Open and later revealed that she was pregnant.

Naomi Osaka and her American rapper boyfriend Cordae welcomed their daughter Shai into the world in Los Angeles in July this year. Right after becoming a mother, the tennis star started working towards a comeback and practicing on a regular basis.

Osaka has played only one game since the 2021 US Open. She was ahead of Daria Gavrilova 1-0 at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo in September, 2021 before the Australian tore an ACL and had to forfeit the match.

Osaka forfeited her second round match, stating that she was not doing well mentally and wanted to take a break to focus on her mental health. Then she was forced to take further time out of the game to have her first child.

Rafael Nadal, Matteo Berrettini, Dominic Thiem and Angelique Kerber are also set to make their comeback next month at the Australian Open 2024.
