Companies like Disney, Apple, Sony Pictures, Warner Bros Discovery, Paramount, and Lionsgate have pulled the plug for now on any advertising on X, formerly Twitter, as Elon Musk faces an outbreak of public anger over antisemitic abuse on his social media platform.

Advertisers are fleeing X/Twitter, as their ads are associated with pro-Nazi content and hate speech, a day after that discovery, a dozen major advertisers put any spending on X/Twitter on hold over antisemitic amplification by Elon Musk.

Media Matters for America said it had identified ads bought by high-profile firms ads, next to posts including praise of Nazis, Holocaust denial, and Hitler quotes.

What caused the Backlash?

Elon Musk, owner of X/Twitter, has been blamed for allowing and even supporting antisemitic abuse on the site. On Wednesday the tech billionaire responded to a post on X/Twitter, the post read, “Jewish communities have been pushing the exact kind of dialectical hatred against whites that they claim to want people to stop using against them. I’m deeply disinterested in giving the tiniest shit now about western Jewish populations coming to the disturbing realization that those hordes of minorities that support flooding their country don’t exactly like them too much”.

“You have said the actual truth,” Mr. Musk replied. The statement from the post is believed to be connected to the replacement theory, a conspiracy theory that claims that nonwhite immigrants, organized by Jewish people, intend to replace the white race and rule the world. Things escalated after the post, as people got the proof they wanted and major companies started taking action based on that.

A spokesperson from X/Twitter, during an interview with BBC, claimed that the company does not intentionally post advertisements “next to this kind of content” and is dedicated to combatting antisemitism.

White House response to Elon Musk?

On Friday, The White House condemned a post on X/Twitter made by Elon Musk, where he accepted a racist assertion made by another account, which charged Jews with inciting hatred toward White people.

“We condemn this abhorrent promotion of Antisemitic and racist hate in the strongest terms, which runs against our core values as Americans,” Andrew Bates, the White House spokesperson said in a statement. “We all have a responsibility to bring people together against hate, and an obligation to speak out against anyone who attacks the dignity of their fellow Americans and compromises the safety of our communities.”

Mr. Bates said in the White House’s response to Mr. Musk’s post that it is “unacceptable to repeat the hideous lie behind the most fatal act of Antisemitism in American history at any time, let alone one month after the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust.”

Mr. Musk’s greatest revenue from X/Twitter is ad dollars, without it, it could become an increasing financial burden and may cause huge losses for the company.
